Dolisie is the third city of the Republic of the Congo, set in the Niari valley in the southwest where the railway from Pointe-Noire climbs out of the Mayombe, and it grew as a railway and timber town. The country around is agricultural, with the Niari valley among the better farming land in the country. The city was called Loubomo for a period before reverting to its earlier name. The city sits at the point where the railway leaves the hills for the valley, which is why the workshops and yards were placed here rather than further along the line.

What you actually see

  • The railway - the Congo-Ocean line the city grew around.
  • The Niari valley - the farming country the city sits in.
  • The timber trade - the industry that built the town.
  • The name history - the city that was Loubomo before reverting to Dolisie.

When to go

June to September is the dry cooler season. The rains fall from October to May. The city is hot and humid year round.

Honest expectations

The city is a working commercial centre with little for visitors. Rail services are unreliable. Facilities are basic.

Nearby

Mont Fouari is west, and Pointe-Noire is southwest.
