Ponce

Ponce calls itself the Pearl of the South and behaves like a rival capital rather than a second city: a grand plaza with a cathedral, streets of neoclassical and criollo mansions in ice-cream colours, and at its centre the Parque de Bombas, a former firehouse painted in bold red and black stripes that has become the island's most photographed building. The Museo de Arte de Ponce holds the Caribbean's strongest European art collection, including Pre-Raphaelite work that draws specialists across the Atlantic. Earthquakes in 2020 damaged parts of the historic centre and restoration continues, so the city wears both its pride and its repairs openly.

When to go

The dry winter months are the most comfortable for walking a city that sits in the island's hot, arid south. Ponce's carnival before Lent is one of the Caribbean's oldest, with vejigante masks and full street celebration. Many museums close Mondays and Tuesdays - check before driving down.

Honest expectations

Ponce is still recovering from the 2020 earthquakes; some buildings remain closed or scaffolded and the centre can look patchy. It is far quieter than San Juan, with less nightlife and fewer visitors, which is precisely what people who like it come for. A car is the practical way to get here and around. Summer heat in the south is genuinely heavy.
