Moca

Mundillo is bobbin lace worked on a cylindrical pillow, brought from Spain and made across Puerto Rico in the past, and it has survived commercially in Moca when it died out almost everywhere else in the Americas. Workshops in the town still produce it, the technique is taught locally, and a museum covers the craft along with the town's history. The Palacete Los Moreau, a former plantation house nearby, is the town's other landmark.

When to go

Year round. The mundillo festival, usually in the autumn, is when the craft is most visible. Workshops keep weekday hours and are best arranged ahead.

Honest expectations

Workshops are small businesses, not attractions, and dropping in unannounced may not work. Museum hours are limited and unreliable. Genuine mundillo is expensive and machine-made imitations are sold as the real thing.
