Getting thereIn Cabo Rojo on the west coast off PR-100
EntryFree; balneario parking charged

Boquerón sits on a wide sheltered bay on the west coast, with a long public beach of pale sand and a village behind it that fills at weekends. The street is lined with stands selling oysters and clams shucked to order with hot sauce and lime, eaten standing up, along with bars that spill onto the pavement. It is one of the liveliest small places on the island at a weekend and very quiet during the week.

What you actually see

  • The oyster stands - shellfish shucked to order on the street with lime and hot sauce.
  • The beach - a long sheltered crescent on the bay, a public balneario.
  • The bay - a wide anchorage used by sailing boats.
  • The weekend street - bars and stalls filling the village front.

When to go

December to April is the drier season. Weekends are when the village comes alive; weekdays are almost silent. Sunsets over the bay are the main evening event.

Honest expectations

During the week much of the village is shut and there is little going on. Weekend nights are loud and parking is difficult. Shellfish is raw and stands vary in how they handle it.

Nearby

Playa Buyé is south, and Playa Sucia is at the cape beyond it.
