Vista Alegre

Vista Alegre was founded in 1824 by José Ferreira Pinto Basto, who obtained a royal licence and built not just a factory but a company village around it - workers' housing, a school, a theatre, a fire station and a medical post, one of the early Portuguese examples of industrial paternalism laid out as a settlement. It was the first porcelain producer in Portugal and remains the best known, supplying royal and state services and continuing in production today. The museum, reopened in 2016 in a purpose-built extension, traces two centuries of output from early nineteenth-century pieces through Art Nouveau and Art Deco to contemporary designer collaborations, alongside the moulds, kilns and painting tools. Within the complex stands the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, a seventeenth-century chapel that predates the factory, holding a remarkable carved Renaissance tomb.

When to go

Year-round. Two to three hours. Factory tours are separate, need booking and run only on working days.

Honest expectations

The factory floor is not part of the standard museum visit and requires a booked tour. The shop is a substantial part of the site. Chapel access can be limited. Ílhavo needs a car or bus from Aveiro.
