Sistelo

Sistelo lies up the Vez valley on the edge of the Peneda-Gerês park, and the whole valley around it is terraced - dry-stone walls stepping up both flanks from the river to the ridge, built over generations to farm steep ground, with irrigation channels, threshing floors, granite espigueiros for storing maize and stone footbridges. The comparison with Tibet is a tourism-board coinage of recent years and it has worked, bringing visitors to a place that had almost none; the underlying reality is that the terraces were built by a population that has largely gone, and most of them are no longer cultivated. The village was classified in 2017 as the first agricultural landscape in Portugal to be listed as a national monument. There is a nineteenth-century manor house, walking routes along the Vez, and river beaches. The road up is narrow.

What you actually see

• The depopulation - terraces built by a community that has largely left.

When to go

April to October; spring and early autumn are greenest. Half a day, longer to walk the Vez routes. The narrow road is difficult in summer traffic.

Honest expectations

The Tibet comparison oversells it - this is a Minho valley, not a Himalayan one. Most terraces are abandoned and scrubbing over. Facilities are minimal and parking is very limited. Summer weekends bring more cars than the road can take.
