Santa Justa Lift

The Elevador de Santa Justa opened in 1902, designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, a Porto-born engineer trained in France, to solve a specific problem: the Baixa was rebuilt flat after 1755, and Chiado above it is forty-five metres higher, which is a hard walk. The solution was a free-standing iron tower with two wooden-panelled cabins, originally steam-powered and electrified in 1907, decorated in neo-Gothic ironwork with geometric patterns. A walkway at the top connects to the Largo do Carmo beside the roofless convent. It is now classified as a national monument and is part of the city's public transport network, which is the useful detail: a Carris day pass covers it, and there is a back way in from the Carmo side that avoids the queue entirely. The viewing platform above the walkway is a separate small charge and gives the Baixa grid, the castle and the river.

• The platform - a spiral stair above the walkway with the Baixa and castle in view.

When to go

Year-round. Thirty to sixty minutes. Early morning avoids the queue, or approach from Largo do Carmo and walk across the bridge for free.

Honest expectations

The queue at street level regularly runs an hour and is entirely avoidable by walking up through Chiado to the Carmo end. The viewing platform is a separate charge. The cabins are small and cramped. It is included in transport passes, which many visitors do not realise.
