The Cistercian abbey at Sulejow was founded in 1176 and its church, consecrated in 1232, is one of the best-preserved Romanesque buildings in Poland - sandstone, a west portal with columns and carved capitals, and a rose window, with the interior largely as built under later furnishing. What makes the site unusual is the enclosure: in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the abbey was walled and towered against Tatar and other raids, so the church stands inside a ring of defensive wall with six surviving towers, giving it the appearance of a small fortress rather than a monastery. The Cistercians were dissolved in 1819 and the buildings decayed; restoration from the 1980s converted part of the range into a hotel and restaurant, which funds the rest. It stands on the Pilica just below a large reservoir, and the setting is quiet even in summer.

What you actually see

  • A Romanesque church of 1232 - sandstone, with a carved west portal and rose window.
  • A fortified enclosure - walls and six towers added against raiding.
  • A working hotel range - part of the monastery converted to fund the rest.
  • The Pilica below - the river and the reservoir just upstream.

When to go

April to October. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Part of the complex is a private hotel and not open to look around. The church closes during services. Interpretation is thin. Reservoir traffic makes summer weekends busier than the site suggests.

Nearby

Piotrkow Trybunalski is fifteen kilometres north; the Sulejow reservoir is upstream.
