Ojcow National Park

Ojcow is the smallest national park in Poland and one of the busiest per square kilometre, because it sits close enough to Krakow to be a standard afternoon out. The park protects the Pradnik valley, a narrow limestone gorge with white cliffs, isolated rock towers and caves cut into the walls. Two buildings anchor it: the ruined castle at Ojcow on a crag above the road, and Pieskowa Skala, a Renaissance residence at the northern end with an arcaded courtyard. Between them stands the Hercules Club, a free standing limestone pillar about thirty metres high that has become the symbol of the whole valley.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, with green or turning beech woods and manageable numbers. Summer weekends are the worst combination of heat and crowds. Weekdays are noticeably calmer at any time of year. The caves keep a steady low temperature, so a layer is useful even on a hot day, and they close for part of the winter.

Honest expectations

The valley has one narrow road with limited paid parking, and on a sunny weekend it clogs completely, with cars parked far from the trailheads. The main path along the stream is more a busy promenade than a wilderness walk. Cave tours are guided in Polish and involve steps and low ceilings, and castle interiors are ticketed separately from the grounds.

Nearby

Krakow is half an hour south, and the ruined castles of the Eagles' Nests trail run north along the same limestone ridge.
