Kornik Arboretum

The arboretum at Kornik began as a nineteenth century landscape park attached to the castle and grew into a scientific collection, now run by the dendrology institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It is the oldest and largest of its kind in the country, holding several thousand species and varieties of trees and shrubs from across the northern hemisphere, laid out along lawns and water. In practice it is a large, quiet park with unusually good trees: North American conifers, Asian maples, old oaks and a magnolia collection that draws a rush of visitors for the two or three weeks it is in flower.

• The magnolia collection - dozens of varieties flowering together in May, the busiest moment of the year here.
• The conifer groups - mature North American and Asian species planted with room to reach full size.
• The lake and lawns - the original landscape park layout, with long views across water to the tree groups.
• Autumn colour - Asian maples and North American species turning through late September and October.

When to go

Two peaks matter: magnolia flowering in May, which is short and weather dependent, and autumn colour from late September into October. Between them the arboretum is green, calm and almost empty on weekdays. The magnolia weekends are genuinely crowded and parking overflows into the town. Opening is seasonal, with shorter hours outside the growing season.

Honest expectations

Outside the two peak windows it is a pleasant park rather than a spectacle, and visitors expecting flowerbeds will find a tree collection with grass between it. Labelling is scientific and mostly Polish. In May the paths near the magnolias are congested with photographers. Facilities on site are minimal, and the neighbouring castle is a separate ticket with its own queue.

Kornik castle stands immediately alongside, and Rogalin with its ancient oaks is a short drive west.
