Poznan Cathedral Island

Ostrow Tumski in Poznan is the strongest claim any place has to being where Poland started: a fortified island settlement of the tenth century, the seat of the first bishopric in 968, and the burial place of Mieszko I and Boleslaw Chrobry, the first ruler and the first king. Under the cathedral floor, reached by stairs into the crypt, are the excavated foundations of the pre-Romanesque church and a large masonry basin that is widely, though not universally, interpreted as the font in which the baptism of 966 took place. The cathedral above is Gothic, rebuilt after 1945 with its baroque skin removed, and has a gilt-bronze Golden Chapel of the 1830s holding the rulers' tomb. Across the water is Porta Posnania, an interpretation centre of 2014 in raw concrete linked to the island by a footbridge, which tells the story better than the site itself can.

Good to know

The identification of the basin as the 966 font is disputed among archaeologists. The crypt is a separate ticket and closes during services. Porta Posnania is closed on Mondays and the audio guide is essentially compulsory.
