Kalisz

Kalisz calls itself the oldest town in Poland because Ptolemy's second-century geography lists a place called Calisia on the amber route between the Baltic and the Danube, and the identification with this site is the standard reading, though not the only one. Roman coins and imports have been found in the area. The town that grew here was a Piast ducal seat, issued one of the earliest Jewish charters in Europe in 1264 - the Statute of Kalisz, which set legal protections that were later extended across the kingdom - and prospered as a cloth town. The centre was destroyed in 1914 and rebuilt in the 1920s, so the old town is largely interwar work on a medieval plan, with a town hall tower, a park along the Prosna and a good district museum covering the Calisia finds. The archaeological reserve at Zawodzie, on the site of the early stronghold, has a reconstructed rampart and a church foundation.

Honest expectations

The oldest-town claim rests on an identification that is probable but debated. Almost nothing medieval is standing - the centre is a 1920s rebuild. Museums close on Mondays. Zawodzie is a modest archaeological site.
