Janowiec Castle

Janowiec was built from 1508 for the Firlej family on the high left bank of the Vistula and enlarged through the sixteenth century into a large Renaissance residence with bastions, courtyards and Italian detailing by Santi Gucci. It declined after damage in 1655 and was a ruin by the twentieth century, and its distinction is administrative rather than architectural: it was the last castle in Poland to remain in private hands, bought between the wars by Leon Kozlowski and held privately until the Vistula Museum in Kazimierz Dolny bought it in 1975. Part has since been rebuilt and roofed to house exhibitions, while the rest is left as ruin, and the contrast between the two treatments is instructive. There is a wooden manor and outbuildings moved to the grounds as an open-air section. In summer a ferry crosses the Vistula to Kazimierz Dolny, which is the pleasant way to arrive.

History

Mikołaj Firlej probably built the castle early in the sixteenth century and his son Piotr enlarged it, and in 1565-1585 the Italian architect Santi Gucci rebuilt it in late Renaissance style. The Swedish army badly damaged it in 1655 and it never regained its former glory; Leon Kozłowski bought it between the wars and repaired two rooms in the tower, and in 1975 it was bought by the Vistula Museum in Kazimierz Dolny (Wikipedia, Janowiec Castle; Polish Wikipedia, Zamek w Janowcu).

Good to know

The ferry runs seasonally and stops in high or low water. Much of the castle remains ruin without interpretation. Closed Mondays. The village has few services.
