Grojec Apples

The country south of Warsaw around Grojec, Warka and Belsk Duzy is the largest continuous apple-growing area in Europe - tens of thousands of hectares, producing a substantial share of the Polish crop, and Poland is the largest apple producer in the European Union and among the largest exporters in the world. Jablka grojeckie hold EU protected geographical indication, with the case resting on the climate: cold winters, a large day-night temperature difference in autumn, and soils that together give firm fruit with high acidity and good colour. In the first half of May the whole district is in blossom, which is a genuine sight from any road through it, and in late September and October it is harvest, with fruit sold from roadside stands and farm gates at prices that surprise visitors. Varieties are mostly modern commercial ones - Ligol, Szampion, Jonagold, Gala, Idared.

There is no visitor infrastructure - this is working farmland, not an attraction, and a car is necessary. Orchards are private. Blossom lasts about a week and the timing shifts with the weather.
