Debno Castle

Debno was built between 1470 and 1480 for Jakub Dembinski, a royal chancellor, and it is the kind of building that matters more to specialists than its size suggests: a compact four-wing castle around a small courtyard, moated, with brick walls on a stone base, and enough original late-Gothic detail left - carved stone door and window frames, vaulting, a corner oriel - that it is used as a reference for what a Polish nobleman's residence of the late fifteenth century actually looked like. Later owners remodelled it many times, including a Renaissance rebuilding in 1586, without changing its original look, and the restoration of 1970-1978 treated it carefully. Inside is a branch of the Tarnow museum with period furnishing, hunting and armour material, and rooms arranged to show the domestic layout. It stands on flat ground beside a park rather than on a hill, since by this date the defensive purpose was secondary to comfort. Concerts of early music are held in the courtyard in summer.

History

A wooden and earth stronghold stood here first, probably held by Świętosław of the Gryfita family, castellan of Wiślica, and in the mid-14th century Dębno passed to the Odrowąż family, to which Jakub of Dębno belonged; he built the castle in 1470-1480. It was rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1586 and changed hands among several noble families; it was renovated in 1970-1978 and has housed a branch of the Tarnów Regional Museum since 1978 (Wikipedia, Dębno Castle).

It is small - two hours covers it. Visits are guided and in Polish unless arranged. Opening is seasonal and reduced in winter. The village around it has almost no services.
