Bobrka Oil Heritage Park

Ignacy Lukasiewicz, a pharmacist from Lviv, distilled kerosene from local crude and built a working oil lamp in 1853, and in 1854 he opened at Bobrka what is generally counted as the first oil well in the world - predating Drake's Pennsylvania well of 1859 - as part of the first commercial oil operation anywhere. The museum stands on that ground and it is not a reconstruction: the shafts Franek and Janina, hand-dug in 1860 and the 1870s, still yield small quantities of oil, and the site holds original rigs, pumps, engines, drilling equipment and the wooden buildings of the works, along with Lukasiewicz's chapel-like memorial. He went on to found the modern petroleum industry in Galicia, and also to spend much of the money on schools, roads and hospitals in the region, which is the part local accounts emphasise. The site is wooded and quiet, and the machinery is out among the trees.

What to expect

Open seasonally with reduced winter access. The site is outdoors and muddy in wet weather. Labelling is largely Polish. The village has almost no services.
