Potipot Island

Potipot is small enough to be understood in one walk: a low island of white sand and shade trees off Candelaria in northern Zambales, about seven hectares, ringed by beach the whole way round so that circling it takes half an hour at a stroll. The water is clear and shallow on the mainland side and deeper on the west, the sand is fine and pale, and there is essentially nothing built on it beyond toilets, a few huts and the caretakers' station - which is the appeal. Boats leave from Uacon and Dawal ports, day-trippers arrive with coolers, and campers pitch tents under the trees for the night, which is when the island is at its best: the day crowd leaves, the fires go on, and the sky over the South China Sea does its work. Weekends and Holy Week are busy and noisy; midweek in the dry season it can be close to private.

When to go

November to May for calm crossings; midweek for quiet. Amihan winds and typhoon season both make the short crossing choppy or impossible.

Practical notes

Facilities are minimal - bring water, food and rubbish bags, and take everything out. Weekend litter is a recurring complaint. Boats are per group, so solo travellers pay more or wait to share.

The Zambales coast at Iba and Botolan, and the Anawangin and Nagsasa coves further south, extend the trip.
