Poblacion is the original town centre of Makati, a grid of narrow streets around the church of Saints Peter and Paul that spent decades as a low-rent district next to one of Asia's wealthiest business quarters, and which since the mid-2010s has become Metro Manila's densest concentration of bars and restaurants. The transformation packed an enormous range into a few blocks: cocktail bars behind unmarked doors, rooftops with views back to the Makati skyline, Korean and Japanese restaurants, third-wave coffee, taco stands, hostels and long-standing carinderias serving the same food they always did. The area's older character - a red-light strip along Burgos Street - has not vanished, and it sits directly alongside the new venues, which surprises visitors who arrive expecting only the cocktail bars. It is walkable, which almost nothing in Metro Manila is, and it works best in the evening.

What you actually see

  • The bar streets - speakeasies and rooftops in a few blocks.
  • The food range - carinderias next to Japanese and Korean kitchens.
  • The old plaza - Saints Peter and Paul church at the centre.
  • The mixed character - new venues alongside the older strip.

When to go

Evenings, any time of year. Thursday to Saturday is busiest; earlier in the week is calmer and easier for tables.

Honest expectations

It is a nightlife district with everything that implies, including the red-light strip along Burgos. Streets are narrow, parking is impossible and ride-hailing surges late. Noise runs into the small hours.

Nearby

Makati's business district and Greenbelt are ten minutes away; Bonifacio Global City is across the river.
