Mount Guiting-Guiting

Guiting-guiting means "jagged" in the local language, and the mountain earns it twice - in the serrated skyline visible from the sea and in the climb itself, which Philippine mountaineers rank as the country's hardest standard route. Rising to just over two thousand metres from a coastline only kilometres away, it demands three days: forest camps, a scramble onto the ridge, and then the notorious sections - the Knife Edge, the Peak of Deception that turns out not to be the summit, and the bare rock traverses where a slip has consequences. Climbers need medical clearance, permits from the protected area office and mandatory guides, and quotas cap the numbers. The setting matters as much as the climb: Sibuyan is an island that was never connected to the rest of the archipelago, and its forests carry an unusually high count of endemic plants and animals in one of the densest undisturbed forest stands in Asia, which is why biologists call it a natural laboratory.

When to go

March to May only; the mountain is closed or unclimbable in the wet season, and typhoons cross this part of the archipelago from June to November. Permits and clearance take advance work.

Honest expectations

This is a technical, exposed, physically brutal climb with a genuine accident history - not a hike. Guides, quotas and medical clearance are mandatory and enforced. Sibuyan itself takes ferries to reach.
