Virgen de la Puerta Otuzco

The image of the Virgen de la Puerta is kept in the basilica at Otuzco, a town of some ten thousand people at 2,600 metres in the highlands above Trujillo, and the story attached to it is that in the seventeenth century, with pirates raiding the coast, the image was placed above the town gate - the puerta - and the town was spared. The devotion grew across the northern highlands and coast, and the December festival now draws hundreds of thousands of people over several days, many walking the road up from Trujillo and the surrounding valleys as a pilgrimage on foot, arriving through the night. The image is crowned and processed, with masses, bands, dancers and fireworks, and the town is completely overwhelmed. It was declared a national cultural heritage and the Virgin was granted a papal coronation in 1943.

When to go

Mid-December, around the 15th, over several days. Two to four days. Accommodation in Otuzco is effectively unavailable; most visitors travel from Trujillo or sleep rough.

Honest expectations

The town cannot absorb the numbers: sanitation, food and transport all break down at peak. Roads are jammed and the last stretch is often walked. Cold nights at 2,600 metres. This is a devotional event, and the crowds behave accordingly.
