Parque del Amor

The Parque del Amor opened on Valentine's Day 1993 on the Miraflores clifftop, designed around a curving mosaic wall in the manner of Gaudí's Park Güell, made from broken tile in bright colours and inscribed with lines of Peruvian love poetry. At its centre is El Beso, a large stone sculpture by Víctor Delfín of a couple lying down kissing, which is the most photographed object in the district. The park looks straight out over the Pacific and is a standard sunset spot, popular with couples, and it hosts a kissing competition each Valentine's Day. Paragliders pass overhead from the launch site nearby. It is small - fifteen minutes is enough to walk around it - and it sits on the malecón, so it is usually taken in as part of a longer walk along the clifftop rather than visited on its own.

When to go

December to April for clear skies; sunset is the point. Thirty to sixty minutes. Valentine's Day is extremely busy.

Honest expectations

Small - a few minutes of actual looking. Grey and viewless from June to October. Crowded at sunset and on weekends, with queues to photograph the sculpture. Vendors work the promenade.
