Ocucaje Desert Fossils

The desert around Ocucaje and the neighbouring Pisco basin exposes marine sediments laid down between roughly forty and five million years ago, when this was shallow sea, and the preservation is exceptional because the desert has protected the bone since. What has come out of it is significant: several species of early whale including Ocucajea and Perucetus, the latter described in 2023 from Ica and argued to have been among the heaviest animals that ever lived; Livyatan melvillei, a sperm whale with teeth over thirty centimetres; giant Otodus megalodon teeth; and four-legged amphibious cetaceans that document whales' transition from land. Fossils lie exposed on the surface across large areas. That accessibility is also the problem - looting has been extensive and material has left the country illegally. Visits must be with licensed guides, and collecting or removing anything is a criminal offence under Peruvian heritage law.

What you actually see

• The exposed bone - marine fossils lying on the desert surface.
• The whale record - early cetaceans including four-legged forms, and Perucetus.
• The shark teeth - megalodon among the material from the basin.
• The looting problem - the reason access is guided and collecting prohibited.

When to go

Any time of year; go early - the desert is severe by mid-morning and there is no shade or water. Half a day with a licensed guide.

Honest expectations

Collecting or removing fossils is illegal under Peruvian heritage law and is prosecuted. Visits require a licensed guide and four-wheel drive. No shade, no water, extreme heat. The best specimens are in museums in Lima and Ica, not on the ground.
