Aramu Muru

On a red sandstone outcrop in the Hayu Marca hills near Juli, a rectangular recess about seven metres square has been cut into the rock face, with a smaller alcove at its base at roughly human height. The stonework is Inca in technique and it is unfinished - the most straightforward reading is an abandoned ceremonial niche or a portal in progress, of a type found elsewhere in the region. Since the 1990s it has acquired a second life as the Puerta de Hayu Marca, promoted in esoteric literature as an interdimensional doorway, and it now draws groups who come to meditate and press their hands into the alcove. Local guides accommodate both readings. The setting is genuinely striking: eroded red rock formations across a hillside above the lake, quiet, with the altiplano stretching away. The site is on community land and a fee is charged.

When to go

April to November. One to two hours including the walk. It is a detour off the Puno to Desaguadero road, usually combined with Juli.

Honest expectations

The doorway story is modern, not Inca tradition, and is presented as fact by some guides. The site is small and quickly seen. At nearly 4,000 metres with no shade. Ceremonial groups sometimes occupy the niche for long periods.
