Chololo Falls

Chololo is not one fall but a stretch of the Piribebuy stream where the water runs over a series of rock ledges and steps in low cascades with pools between them, easy to get into and shallow enough for children, which is why it became the most used bathing spot in the Cordillera. The area is developed with paths, changing facilities, food stalls and picnic ground, and at weekends and through the summer holidays it fills with families from Asuncion an hour away. During the week it is quiet. The rock is smooth and slippery and the pools shallow, and flow varies with rainfall; after heavy rain the stream rises quickly.

When to go

October to April for swimming and the fullest flow. Weekdays are quiet; weekends and January holidays are extremely busy. The stream rises fast after rain.

Practical notes

Weekend and holiday crowding is heavy, with music, stalls and litter. The rock is very slippery. Flow drops in dry periods to little more than trickles. Charges apply at the entrance.
