The Naso of the Teribe River

The Naso live along the Teribe river inland from Changuinola and are unusual in retaining a hereditary king, one of very few indigenous peoples in the Americas to do so, with the position passing within a single family and subject to community assent. Their comarca was formally recognised in 2020 after decades of campaigning. Visits are arranged through the communities and involve a boat up the river, with stays in village guesthouses.

What to look for

• The river journey - the boat run up the Teribe from El Silencio.
• The hereditary monarchy - one of the last such institutions among American indigenous peoples.
• The village guesthouses - the community-run accommodation upriver.
• The forest surroundings - the woodland along the Teribe above the villages.

When to go

December to April is drier with easier river travel. The river rises fast in the wet season. Visits must be arranged in advance.

Before you go

Visits must be arranged with the communities and cannot be turned up for. Boat travel depends on river levels and is cancelled after rain. Accommodation is basic village guesthouses.
