In pine-shaded hollows south of Bethlehem lie three stone reservoirs of startling scale - Solomon's Pools by tradition, engineering of the Hasmonean-to-Herodian centuries by scholarship - which gathered spring and rain water and sent it to Jerusalem along aqueducts whose channels can still be traced; the system served, with Ottoman renewals, into the twentieth century, making it among history's longest-working waterworks. The pools' cut-stone walls step down the valley in cathedral proportions, an Ottoman fortress (Qal'at el-Burak) guards the head of the works, and the site's picnic-grove tradition keeps the shade sociable.

What you actually see

  • The three pools - cut-stone reservoirs at cathedral scale.
  • The aqueduct traces - channels of the Jerusalem line.
  • Qal'at el-Burak - the Ottoman fort guarding the works.
  • The pine groves - the site's long picnic tradition.

When to go

Spring and autumn for shaded comfort; winter rains part-fill the pools photogenically. Regional practicalities follow current local advice as standard.

Honest expectations

Plan by current local practicalities as standard. On site: the pools are unfenced engineering - edges deserve care, especially with children; interpretation varies, and the fortress's opening depends on the day's arrangements.

Nearby

Bethlehem, Battir's terraces and the al-Khader valley.
