Ziarat Juniper Forest

The juniper forest around Ziarat covers a large area of the Balochistan highlands at around 2,400 metres and is generally counted among the largest stands of its kind anywhere, with individual trees estimated at well over a thousand years old and some claimed to be far older. Juniper grows extraordinarily slowly in this dry climate, a few centimetres a year, which is why the forest is fragile: trees cut for firewood are effectively irreplaceable within a human lifetime, and grazing prevents regeneration, so the stand is classed as threatened despite protection. Ziarat town itself is a small hill station with orchards and a colonial-era residency building. The landscape is austere and beautiful, bare stony hills with dark twisted junipers scattered across them, quite unlike any other forest in the country.

When to go

April to October for comfortable access; Ziarat gets genuine snow in winter and roads can close, though snowfall is part of its appeal for Pakistani visitors. Spring blossom in the orchards is good. Nights are cold at altitude even in summer.

Honest expectations

The forest is open woodland, not dense stands, so visitors expecting a thick forest will find something sparser and stranger. Facilities in Ziarat are limited and hotel quality basic. Firewood cutting remains a visible problem. Roads from Quetta are ordinary but the journey takes a few hours.
