Thar Desert

The Pakistani portion of the Thar covers Tharparkar district, and it is a populated desert rather than an empty one: villages of round thatched huts sit among low dunes, wells are dug deep for brackish water, and the population is unusually mixed, with a large Hindu community living alongside Muslim neighbours in a way that Tharparkar is locally proud of. Peacocks are everywhere, wild and semi-tame around the villages, and their calls carry across the dunes at dawn. The desert transforms after the monsoon: rains in July and August raise a flush of grass and wildflowers, the dunes green over, and livestock fatten, so late August and September show the Thar at its most beautiful and least desert-like. Drought years are hard here and the district has suffered repeated water crises. Mithi is the main town and the usual base.

What you actually see

• Thatched villages - round huts, painted walls and deep wells among the dunes.
• Peacocks - abundant around the villages and fields.
• The green season - grass and flowers across the dunes after monsoon rains.
• Mixed communities - Hindu and Muslim villages side by side, with shared festivals.

When to go

November to February for comfortable temperatures. Late August and September for the green Thar, which is the visual highlight but brings humidity and difficult tracks. Summer before the rains is extremely hot and dusty.

Honest expectations

Accommodation is basic, mostly simple guesthouses in Mithi, and village tracks need a four-wheel drive. Water is scarce and often brackish; carry your own. Visitors should approach villages as guests rather than as photographers, asking before taking pictures. Drought conditions are a real hardship for residents and not scenery.
