Ratti Gali Lake

Ratti Gali sits in a glacial bowl at around 3,700 metres above the Neelum valley, fed by snowmelt from the ridges above and draining into the river below. The approach is a rough jeep track climbing from Dowarian through forest and then open pasture, followed by a walk of the last stretch to the basin. What makes it memorable is the timing: the snow clears late and the season is short, so for a few weeks in high summer the meadows around the lake come out in dense wildflowers, and the water sits intensely blue against the remaining snowfields. Camps are set up at the base area through the season with tents for hire and simple food, and horses carry those who prefer not to walk the final section. Outside the summer window the track is impassable and the basin is under snow.

When to go

July to September only; the track opens as snow clears and closes early. Late July and August are peak for flowers and for crowds. Nights are near freezing at the lake even in midsummer, so proper gear matters.

Honest expectations

The jeep track is rough and driven hard by local operators; passengers find it uncomfortable and sometimes alarming. Altitude affects visitors arriving quickly from low elevations. Camp facilities are basic with poor sanitation, and litter around the lake has become a real problem in peak weeks. Weather can turn suddenly.
