Okstindan is the highest range in Nordland south of the Lofoten peaks, topped by Oksskolten at 1,916 metres, and it carries Okstindbreen, the largest glacier in northern Norway outside Svartisen, a broad ice field draped over the plateau between the summits. The area is remote and lightly visited: approaches take hours on foot from the road ends, and the Rabothytta lodge, opened in 2014 with a striking pointed timber design, sits at 1,200 metres facing the ice as the main base. A long suspension footbridge crosses the meltwater river on the approach from Leirskardalen. Glacier research has been conducted here since the 1970s, and the ice has retreated measurably through that period.

What you actually see

  • Okstindbreen - a broad glacier spread across the plateau.
  • Oksskolten - the highest peak in Nordland at 1,916 metres.
  • Rabothytta - a modern pointed timber lodge facing the ice.
  • The suspension bridge - a long footbridge over the glacier river.

When to go

July to September, when the approaches are clear of snow and the lodge is staffed; the season is short at this latitude and altitude. Spring is a ski-touring period for the experienced. Weather changes rapidly and cloud on the glacier is frequent.

Honest expectations

Approach walks are long, four to six hours, with river crossings and rough ground. Rabothytta is popular and must be booked. Glacier travel needs rope and crevasse skills, and the ice should not be entered unguided.

Nearby

Mo i Rana and the Svartisen glacier lie north; the Swedish border and Umbukta are east.
