Bryggens Museum

A fire at Bryggen in 1955 destroyed part of the wharf and exposed the ground beneath, and the excavation that followed ran for over a decade and produced one of the richest medieval urban archaeological records in northern Europe: building foundations from the twelfth century onward, along with leather, textiles, pottery, ships' timbers and around six hundred runic inscriptions on wood, most of them everyday messages, business notes, love letters and insults. The museum, opened in 1976, was built directly over the excavated foundations, which are displayed in place on the lower floor with the finds arranged around them. It is a different experience from the standing wharf outside, dealing with the four centuries before the buildings now on the site.

When to go

Year-round; the museum is indoors and pairs naturally with a walk through the Bryggen wharf outside. It closes on some weekdays in winter and hours are longer in summer.

What to expect

The material is archaeological and needs attention rather than offering spectacle. The building is a plain 1970s structure. It is easy to confuse with the Hanseatic Museum next door, which covers a different period and charges separately.
