The Šarena Džamija in Tetovo was first built in 1438 and rebuilt in 1833, and unusually for a mosque it is painted all over: the exterior and interior walls carry floral panels, geometric work and depictions of buildings, including a representation understood as Mecca, in a style that draws on both Ottoman and local decorative traditions. Some thirty thousand egg whites are said to have gone into the paint. A hammam and a tomb stand beside it.

What you actually see

  • The painted exterior - floral and geometric panels covering the outside walls.
  • The painted interior - the same treatment carried through the prayer hall.
  • The Mecca depiction - the architectural representation on one of the panels.
  • The riverside setting - the mosque beside the Pena with its garden and tomb.

When to go

April to October is most comfortable. Visits should avoid the five prayer times and Friday midday. Dress rules apply.

Honest expectations

It is an active mosque and visiting outside prayer times matters. Shoes come off and modest dress is required, with headscarves for women. Photography inside may not be permitted.

Nearby

Arabati Baba Teke is nearby, and Popova Sapka is above.
