Matka Canyon

Matka Canyon, only a short drive west of Skopje, is one of North Macedonia's most beautiful and accessible natural escapes, a dramatic gorge where the Treska River winds emerald-green between steep, forested cliffs. A dam has created a serene reservoir at its heart, plied by small boats and kayaks. Trails hug the cliffs past medieval monasteries and churches clinging to the rock, while boat trips lead to the Vrelo Cave, an underwater cavern thought to be one of the deepest in the world. It is a wonderful blend of nature, adventure and heritage.

When to go

April to October, for the best weather, hiking and boating conditions; spring brings lush greenery and autumn fine colour, while summer is popular for kayaking and cave trips. Being so close to Skopje, it makes an easy half-day escape, best enjoyed on a clear, mild day.

Honest expectations

Its proximity to the capital makes it popular and sometimes busy on summer weekends, with queues for the boat trips to the cave, so early or weekday visits are calmest. The canyon is scenic rather than vast or wild. As a beautiful, easily reached blend of dramatic gorge scenery, clifftop monasteries, hiking and boating right beside Skopje, though, Matka is a delightful and worthwhile trip.
