Idanre Hills

Granite domes bubble out of the Ondo forest at Idanre, and for centuries the town lived on top of them - a kingdom in the sky reached by the stairway that today counts some 660 steps past resting huts to the old settlement: the Owa's palace, courts, shrines, a colonial-era schoolhouse and the mysteries the guides relate with relish, from unreadable inscriptions to the footprint of legend. The community moved downhill in the twentieth century, leaving the heights as a heritage site where mist threads the inselbergs at dawn and the modern town spreads its roofs below.
