An hour southeast of Niamey lives a conservation resurrection: the West African giraffe - the pale peralta subspecies - was down to a few dozen animals in the 1990s, all in this one tiger-bush zone around Koure, before protection led by local communities turned the count into hundreds. The visit is Sahelian safari at its most direct: official guides board your vehicle at the post, track the day's herds through the scrub, and giraffes browse acacia crowns at distances that need no telephoto, villagers passing on the same paths in long-practised coexistence. It is Niger's flagship wildlife encounter and one of Africa's happiest population graphs.

What you actually see

  • The peralta herds - the pale giants browsing the tiger-bush.
  • The tracking drive - guides reading the day's movements.
  • The coexistence - herds and villages sharing the plateau.
  • The comeback story - dozens to hundreds, told by its keepers.

When to go

November to February for cool mornings and gathered herds; the giraffes range further in the rains. Morning visits find the animals at their most active. Current travel guidance frames all regional planning - arrange via Niamey operators.

Honest expectations

Plan with current conditions and trusted local operators first, as throughout the country. On site, the guides' rules keep distances honest - these are wild animals in thorn country. Fees support the protection that produced the comeback; pay them as applause.

Nearby

Niamey, the Dosso road villages and the river valley.
