The Aïr Mountains and Ténéré Desert

The Aïr Mountains and the Ténéré Desert, in the deep Sahara of northern Niger, together form one of the largest protected areas in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage site of breathtaking desert grandeur. The Aïr is a range of jagged, dark volcanic massifs rising abruptly from the sands, sheltering hidden valleys, oases, rock art and pockets of life, while beyond them stretches the Ténéré, a vast and almost mythical ocean of golden dunes and gravel plains, one of the emptiest and most spectacular deserts on earth. When to go

November to February, the cool dry season, is the only comfortable and practical time for the deep Sahara, avoiding the extreme heat; the winter desert is mild by day and cold at night, suited to camel or vehicle expeditions with guides. The dunes are most beautiful in the low golden light of dawn and dusk.

The Aïr and Ténéré are among the most remote wildernesses on earth, reached only on serious guided expeditions with camels or vehicles, so they demand time, planning and a spirit of real adventure.
