The part that catches visitors out is freedom camping. It is legal in some places and not others, the rules are set by each district council rather than nationally, and enforcement is real: instant fines are issued, and the crucial distinction is whether your vehicle is certified self-contained, meaning it has a fixed toilet and holding tanks sufficient for several days. Non-self-contained vehicles are barred from most freedom camping sites entirely, and the certification standard was tightened in the 2020s. The other realities are practical: roads are narrower and slower than they look, distances take longer than a map suggests, and one-way hire and the Cook Strait ferry add real cost.
