Lauwersmeer National Park

Until 1969 this was an arm of the sea. A dam closed it off, the water slowly turned fresh, and what was left is a shallow lake ringed by reed, wet grassland and old mudflats that nobody bothered to drain. Konik horses and Highland cattle graze it down, which keeps the ground open, and the bird list runs long: geese and waders in numbers on passage, spoonbills, marsh harriers, sea eagles in winter. The second reason people come is the sky. Lauwersmeer is a certified dark sky park, one of the few places in the country far enough from streetlights to show a proper band of stars, and the visitor centre runs night viewing sessions when conditions allow.

What you actually see

• The bird hides - screens and towers looking over shallow water and grazed marsh, busiest on spring and autumn passage.
• Grazing herds - konik horses and Highland cattle kept out year-round to hold back the scrub.
• The dark sky - organised night sessions and open viewing points away from any lighting.
• The circuit by bicycle - a flat route right around the lake, linking Lauwersoog, Zoutkamp and the reserve entrances.

When to go

April to June for breeding and passage birds, autumn for geese arriving in tens of thousands. Star gazing works best from autumn through winter when nights are genuinely long, which also means cold and a real chance of cloud. Summer days are pleasant for cycling but the wildlife is quieter and the mosquitoes are not.

Honest expectations

It is flat, open and exposed, with wind most days and no shelter on the cycle routes. Wildlife watching means patience with a scope rather than easy sightings, and grazed sections are closed to walkers. Clear nights are far from guaranteed in a maritime climate, so a trip planned around the stars can be wasted. Facilities are thin outside the two harbour villages.
