Kalinchowk Bhagwati is a shrine on a rocky summit at around 3,800 metres in Dolakha, a trident-marked outcrop that is a pilgrimage site and the source of the Sun Koshi river, and a cable car built from Kuri in 2019 put it within reach of a day trip from Kathmandu. That access changed it: the ridge now receives very large numbers of Nepali visitors, particularly in winter when snow lies and many of them are seeing it for the first time. The Himalayan view from the summit takes in Gaurishankar, Langtang and, in clear conditions, a long line east. Kuri village below has lodges. The combination of pilgrimage, snow tourism and a cable car makes it a busy and distinctly domestic destination.

What you actually see

  • The summit shrine - the trident-marked rock and its offerings.
  • Winter snow - the reason for the crowds in December and January.
  • The cable car - the lift from Kuri to the ridge.
  • The Gaurishankar view - the range north on clear days.

When to go

December to February for snow, which is the peak season and extremely busy. October and November give the clearest mountain views with fewer people. Monsoon brings cloud and mud.

Honest expectations

Winter weekends are overwhelmed, with long cable car queues and crowded lodges. At 3,800 metres altitude and cold are significant, and many day visitors arrive underdressed. The road up to Kuri is rough. The site is commercial and busy rather than contemplative.

Nearby

Charikot lies below; Kathmandu is west.
