Begnas Lake

Begnas is the second largest of the Pokhara valley lakes and the one that Phewa is not: no lakeside strip, no trekking agencies, just water among terraced hills with rice paddies coming down to the shore, fish farms in cages, and a small bazaar at one end. Rowing boats can be hired and the far shores are quiet. The Panchabhaiya ridge between Begnas and the smaller Rupa lake carries a walking path with views over both waters and, on clear days, Annapurna and Machhapuchhre behind. Homestays operate in the villages around. It is twenty minutes from Pokhara but feels considerably further, and it works as the antidote to Lakeside for anyone who has had enough of it.

When to go

October to April for clear weather and mountain backdrops; the paddies are greenest in the monsoon and gold before the autumn harvest. Weekends bring Pokhara visitors to the bazaar end.

Honest expectations

There is very little organised to do beyond boating and walking, which is the point. Facilities are basic and concentrated at the bazaar. The water is used for fish farming and is not the clearest. Mountain views depend on air clarity.
