Bardia National Park
Nepal's largest lowland park, far enough west to stay quiet, and the country's best chance of seeing a wild tiger on foot.

Bardia lies in the far western Terai, a long way from the tourist circuit, and that isolation is why it remains the wildest of Nepal's lowland parks. It protects sal forest, grassland and the Karnali river, and it holds a significant Bengal tiger population along with greater one-horned rhino, wild elephant, swamp deer and, in the river, the gharial crocodile and Gangetic river dolphin. The distinctive experience here is walking: guided jungle walks with a licensed guide, often sitting for hours on a riverbank or at a machan overlooking a waterhole, waiting. Sightings are never guaranteed and the walking format makes them feel earned rather than delivered. Tharu villages surround the park and community homestays are well established.
What you actually see
- Guided jungle walks - on foot with licensed guides, the signature Bardia experience.
- Riverbank tiger watching - long waits at the Karnali and Babai river crossings.
- Gharial and river dolphin - on boat trips down the Karnali.
- Tharu culture - village homestays, stick dances and traditional longhouses.
When to go
October to April is the season; March to May offers the best tiger sightings as animals come to water, but is very hot. The park effectively closes to visitors during the monsoon from June to September, and the grasslands are cut in January, which improves visibility.
Honest expectations
Getting here is the barrier: a flight plus a long drive, or a very long bus. Sightings take patience measured in days, not hours, and plenty of visitors leave without seeing a tiger. Walking safaris in country holding tiger, rhino and elephant carry genuine risk, and the safety briefing is not a formality. Accommodation is simple lodges rather than luxury camps.
Nearby
Nepalgunj is the air gateway; Lumbini lies to the east along the Terai.
