Chocas Beach

Chocas sits on the Mossuril peninsula across the bay from Mozambique Island, a small village with a beach of pale sand backed by casuarinas and a few old Portuguese holiday houses. Dhows cross the bay to the island from here and the ruins of Cabaceira Pequena, with a sixteenth-century church and an old well, are a short distance along the shore. It is quiet, particularly outside the holiday weeks.

When to go

May to October is the cooler dry season and the most comfortable. Mozambican holiday weeks bring visitors. Cyclone season from December to March affects the coast.

Honest expectations

Facilities are limited to a few small places to stay and eat. The road in is rough in stretches. Dhow crossings depend on tide and wind and prices should be agreed first.
