Martil Beach

Martil was Tetouan's port from the medieval period, at the mouth of the Martil river, and it became the city's beach resort in the twentieth century - the Mediterranean here is warm, calm compared with the Atlantic side, and shelves gently, which is why it is a family beach rather than a surf one. The sand runs several kilometres and a promenade with cafes, ice cream and apartment blocks backs it. In July and August it is one of the busiest beaches in northern Morocco, with Moroccan families and returning emigrants from Europe filling the town; out of season it is a quiet provincial place with a fishing harbour and a few open cafes. Tetouan, ten kilometres inland, has a UNESCO-listed medina with a strongly Andalusian character, and the two are usually visited together.

Honest expectations

August is extremely crowded and accommodation prices double. Litter after busy weekends is heavy. Development behind the beach is dense and unattractive. Out of season most businesses close.
