Getting thereSoutheast of Ulcinj on the coast; road access at several points
EntryFree; beach bars and loungers charged

Velika Plaža runs about twelve kilometres southeast from Ulcinj to the mouth of the Bojana, and it is the longest beach in Montenegro, grey sand shelving very gradually so that the water stays shallow a long way out. That, plus the steady afternoon wind, has made it a kitesurfing and windsurfing centre, and the shallow warm water is used by families. Development along it is patchy, with long stretches still backed by scrub and dune.

What you actually see

  • The length - about twelve kilometres of continuous sand, the country's longest beach.
  • The shallows - water staying shallow a very long way out from the shore.
  • The kite and windsurf schools - the operators using the steady afternoon wind.
  • The dune scrub - undeveloped stretches behind the sand.

When to go

May to October; the wind for kiting is most reliable in the afternoons through summer. July and August are busiest. The sea warms early here and stays warm into autumn.

Honest expectations

The sand is grey rather than white and the water is murky where the Bojana silt reaches it. Development along parts of the beach is untidy and unfinished. There is little shade.

Nearby

Ulcinj is northwest, and Ada Bojana is southeast.
