Uushigiin Uvur Deer Stones

Deer stones are standing monoliths raised across Mongolia and neighbouring regions in the late Bronze Age, roughly 1200 to 700 BC, carved with stylised deer whose bodies flow upward as if in flight, along with belts, weapons, mirrors and earrings, so that each stone reads as an abstracted human figure equipped for the afterlife. They stand near burial mounds and sacrificial hearths. Uushigiin Uvur near Moron is one of the finest groups, with fourteen stones in a row on open steppe, several of them richly carved and standing to head height or more, and it forms part of the World Heritage listing inscribed in 2023 covering the deer stone complexes. There is nothing built at the site beyond a fence and a sign, so the encounter is direct: stones in grass with mountains behind and nobody else there.

What you actually see

• The stone row - fourteen monoliths standing on open ground.
• Flying deer carvings - the stylised animals that give the stones their name.
• Weapons and belts - carved equipment marking the figures.
• Burial mounds - the associated graves and hearths around the row.

When to go

May to September for the tracks; the site is exposed and cold outside summer. Low sun early or late throws the carvings into relief and is far better than midday for seeing them. It takes under an hour.

Honest expectations

The site is small and unstaffed with minimal interpretation. Carvings are weathered and some are faint. There are no facilities. Touching or climbing on the stones is not acceptable. Combine it with a Khovsgol trip rather than travelling for it alone.
