Tsaatan Reindeer Camps of Tsagaannuur

The Dukha, commonly called Tsaatan, are a few hundred people in the taiga north of the Darkhad valley who herd reindeer for milk, transport and hides rather than for meat, one of the southernmost reindeer-herding cultures in the world. They live in urts, conical pole tents covered in canvas, and move camp several times a year following lichen pasture, splitting into east and west taiga groups. Reaching them means riding a day or two from Tsagaannuur through bog and forest with a guide, and staying means being a guest in a working camp at the edge of what herding can sustain. Reindeer numbers have fallen and the community faces pressure from hunting restrictions, disease and the pull of settled life, and tourism has become a significant part of the household economy, which brings its own complications.

When to go

June to September; the taiga is impassable and brutally cold outside that. Midsummer brings clouds of mosquitoes. Camps move, so their location changes and a guide arranges the meeting.

Honest expectations

This is a visit to people's homes, not an attraction: arrangements should go through the community or reputable operators who pay properly, and photographing families requires asking. The ride in is hard, wet and long, and camping is basic. Some visitors find the encounter uncomfortable given the economic imbalance; going with that awareness matters.
