Changing of the Palace Guard

Every day at 11:55, the Carabiniers du Prince - the principality's compact ceremonial corps, white uniforms in summer, black in winter - conduct the relief of the palace guard on the Place du Palais with drums, precise drill and a duration measured in minutes. It is Monaco's most democratic spectacle: free, daily and framed by the palace facade with the harbour below. Arriving early buys a front-row spot at the chains; arriving at 11:54 buys a view of other people's phones. The old town's lanes and the cathedral holding the princely tombs round out the hour on the rock.

Honest expectations

It is short - blink-and-done by ceremony standards - and summer crowds four-deep are normal, so position by 11:30 or accept the periscope experience. The square is fully exposed to sun. The palace interior opens seasonally and queues separately. Manage expectations to scale: this is charm, not Buckingham pageantry.
