Moldovan Village Homestays

Moldova's most distinctive travel experience is not a monument but a night in a village house. Rural guesthouses across the country - Trebujeni near Orheiul Vechi, Butuceni, Rascov and dozens of others - put visitors in family homes where the wine comes from the household cellar in unlabelled bottles, the food is placinte pastries, mamaliga polenta with brinza cheese and sarmale cabbage rolls, and the evening involves being fed considerably more than intended. It is the practical form of a hospitality culture that Moldovans take seriously, and it supports villages that have lost much of their population to work abroad.

Before you go

Facilities vary from basic to comfortable and standards are not consistent - book through established rural tourism networks rather than at random. Homemade wine is strong and refusing more is genuinely difficult; pace yourself early. English is limited in villages, though Romanian and Russian go far. Rural roads and marshrutka connections are slow, so a car helps considerably.
