San Carlos

San Carlos is where the Sonoran desert runs straight into the Sea of Cortez, and the meeting produces the region's signature image: the twin volcanic horns of Cerro Tetakawi rising directly above a bay of turquoise water, with saguaro and cardon cactus growing to the tideline. The town is a low-rise resort and marina community favoured by North American snowbirds and Sonoran families, strung along beaches - Los Algodones' pale dunes, San Francisco, Piedras Pintas - that shelve gently into water clear enough to have drawn Jacques Cousteau's much-quoted enthusiasm for the gulf as an aquarium. Diving and snorkelling work the rocky points and islands, sportfishing runs for marlin and dorado, and boats visit sea lion colonies and the wreck-and-reef sites offshore. On land, the Tetakawi trail climbs to the saddle for the panorama, canyons behind town hold desert springs, and the Nacapule canyon shelters palms and rare plants. Winters are warm and dry; summers are extreme, which is why the town half-empties from June to September.

When to go

October to May for warm, dry days and calm water; summer heat is severe and hurricane season affects late summer. Winter brings the snowbird population and full marinas.

Honest expectations

It is a quiet resort town, not a party destination - nightlife is a handful of bars. Summer temperatures and closures catch visitors out. Sea conditions vary; boat trips cancel in wind.
