Puerto Penasco

Puerto Penasco - Rocky Point to its many Arizona visitors, who drive down in four hours - sits at the top of the Gulf of California where the desert meets a shallow sea. Two things define it. The first is the tide: the upper gulf has an extreme tidal range, and when the water pulls back it exposes wide flats and the tidal pools of Playa Las Conchas and the rocky shelves near the old port, where visitors find sea stars, urchins, hermit crabs, octopus and anemones in the puddles - an accessible, genuinely rich intertidal that the local research station studies and interprets. The second is the beach town itself: long sandy strands lined with condominium resorts, the working shrimp fleet and seafood restaurants of the old port under the Cholla hill, sandboarding on nearby dunes, and boats out to Isla San Jorge's sea lion colony. The wider setting is protected - the upper gulf biosphere reserve, home to the critically endangered vaquita porpoise, and El Pinacate's volcanic desert inland.

When to go

October to May for pleasant temperatures; check tide tables and plan pool visits around the lowest water. Summer is very hot and spring-break weeks are loud.

Honest expectations

Development is heavy along the main beaches and the town is thoroughly geared to cross-border tourism. Tide pools are fragile - look, replace stones, take nothing. Currents on the flats can rise fast as the tide returns.
